2025 has been heavy.

Global conflict, economic strain, and shrinking humanitarian resources have left many of us wondering where to even begin. For LGBTIQ refugees, that uncertainty is even more real.

Two weeks ago in Kenya, our Communications & Development Coordinator, Kyle Kvamme, heard LGBTIQ refugees share their fears about what it would mean if major humanitarian organizations were forced to scale back support.

But he also witnessed something profoundly hopeful. “I met LGBTIQ refugees who were turning around and lifting others up. Even with limited resources and their own challenges, they used what they had to support those who came after them.”

In the U.S., research shows transgender people are more than four times as likely as cisgender people to experience violence.

Globally, the Trans Murder Monitoring Project has recorded more than 5,000 murders of trans and gender‑diverse people since 2008.

At ORAM, we honour and mourn the lives lost to anti‑trans violence — especially among refugee and displaced communities, who face compounded risks. 🕯️

We reaffirm our commitment to protect, empower, and advocate for transgender refugees and other displaced LGBTIQ individuals worldwide. 🏳️‍⚧️

Meet Freedom House Initiative (FHI), which collaborates with ORAM’s short‑term housing program to provide safe, dignified shelter to displaced LGBTIQ people. Through an apartment the organization rents, four LGBTIQ refugees live with support to rebuild their lives — access to essentials, community, and stability.

Last week, ORAM’s team visited their apartment and met three clients: a trans woman from Uganda, a trans man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a trans woman from an undisclosed location. They spoke about how the apartment has become a “healing house” — a place of belonging that many had not known in a long time.

We extend our gratitude to Freedom House Initiative for their leadership, and to all their staff who make this work possible. Together, we’re building a path to safety and inclusion for trans and queer refugees in Kenya.

In July, ORAM co-hosted a powerful two-day gathering in Mexico City with @casarefugiados, @uniofnottingham, and @poesiapintadaoficial to address LGBTIQ forced displacement and international protection.

From panel discussions to art therapy workshops and community dialogues, the event created space for learning, healing, and action.

At a time when violence, discrimination, and lack of state protection continue to displace LGBTIQ people across Latin America, Mexico is becoming a key place of transit, return, and refuge.

We were honored to welcome 77 participants, including more than a dozen LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers.

This erasure has serious consequences.
In the article, ORAM’s Executive Director, Steve Roth, calls out the harm:

“This is a targeted and malicious act that will directly endanger lives.”

He adds, “Courts rely on these reports to evaluate asylum claims,” and without them, LGBTIQ asylum seekers may face even greater barriers to safety.”

Meet Joan and Vanessa — two LGBTIQ refugees from Colombia now living in Mexico City. Together, they founded @poesiapintadaoficial, an LGBTIQ refugee-owned business specializing in graphic design, illustration, and art therapy workshops.

ORAM proudly partnered with them to bring art therapy to 24 LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers, fostering healing and connection through creativity.

Despite their dedication to uplifting others, Joan and Vanessa’s own lives have been turned upside down. Their home was damaged in a flood, they’ve endured physical violence, and they are struggling to meet basic food and healthcare needs.

Andry Hernández Romero, a gay asylum seeker from Venezuela, was sent from El Salvador’s CECOT prison and returned to Venezuela, his legal team confirmed.

In March, U.S. authorities transferred him during a scheduled asylum appointment and held him in CECOT for 125 days — without giving him a hearing.

Riley, a nonbinary refugee from Rwanda living in Nairobi, shared with us the discrimination they face daily—being denied services, struggling to find safe work, and facing harassment because of their gender identity.

The event brought together 52 participants from 41 organizations, including refugee-led organizations, grassroots and community-based organizations, LGBTIQ advocacy groups, INGOs, UN agencies, independent researchers, activists and donors. Participants joined from across the region, including Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, Czechia, Germany, France, and more.

For over 15 years, she’s helped NGOs and UN agencies advance their fundraising, communications, and strategy efforts across four continents.

She began her career in publishing before transitioning into international development in 2008. Ariane holds an MSc in Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Political Science from McGill University.

Originally from New York City, she now lives in Ottawa with her spouse, children, and a growing crew of pets.

In Nairobi, ORAM joined LGBTIQ refugees, partners, and allies at a vibrant community event hosted by the Canadian High Commission. The celebration featured a powerful panel discussion, a fashion show displaying queer creativity, and a dynamic resource fair where refugee-led initiatives took center stage.

Meet Franklin, a gay refugee from Honduras now residing in Mexico City. Through his participation in ORAM's focus groups, Franklin co-created our Guide for LGBTIQ Refugees in Mexico City, offering invaluable insights to support others on similar journeys.

A few years ago, Franklin survived a brutal attack that left him disabled, causing chronic pain and making it difficult to find employment. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to rebuild his life and achieve independence.

At ORAM, we are committed to empowering LGBTIQ refugees like Franklin by providing tools and resources to help them thrive.

Across the globe, LGBTQ refugees face escalating threats in transit countries and severe cuts to humanitarian aid. With U.S. resettlement programs halted, organizations like ORAM are striving to provide support with diminishing resources.

Our clients — who fled discrimination, persecution, and political instability in Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Ecuador — often came from precarious conditions, including living on the streets or in overcrowded shelters.

This life-changing program offers them a place to rest, recover, and focus on their legal and medical needs.

A few weeks ago, ORAM’s Capacity Strengthening Specialist, Aras Örgen, joined a powerful conversation at Dersim is Colorful, a community event hosted by @dersimgemeinde in Cologne, Germany.

Dersim Gemeinde Köln e.V., a migrant- and refugee-led association promoting the culture of the Kurdish and Alawite community, organized the event as part of their first-ever initiative focused on LGBTIQ rights. The program aimed to raise awareness, deepen understanding, and build support networks for LGBTIQ individuals — especially those navigating displacement.

Aras helped unpack common myths, answered frequently asked questions, and offered practical insights into what allyship looks like in action while highlighting ORAM’s global work supporting LGBTIQ refugees.

The Trump Administration recently deported 238 Venezuelan migrants to a maximum security prison in El Salvador. Among them was Andry Hernandez Romero — a gay asylum seeker and makeup artist who fled Venezuela to escape persecution based on his sexual orientation and political beliefs.

Andry had a credible asylum case. The U.S. government recognized that his fears were real — that he could win protection. But last month, without his attorney's knowledge, Andry was shackled and put on a plane to El Salvador.

There, he was filmed crying for his mother and overheard pleading:
"I'm not a gang member. I'm gay. I'm a stylist."

The only "evidence" immigration officials cited? Tattoos of crowns — "symbols" linked to a Venezuelan gang.

"We have grave concerns about whether he can survive," his lawyer, Lindsay Toczylowski, told @60minutes.

Andry's case is a chilling reminder of what's at stake for LGBTQ asylum seekers under the Trump administration.
