ORAM closed out 2025 in Kakuma with a moment of pride and celebration as nearly a dozen LGBTIQ refugees graduated from a skills training course in hairdressing and beauty therapy. 💆‍♀️💈

After five months of dedication and hard work, each graduate received a certificate at the November ceremony — a meaningful step toward applying their skills and earning income within the camp and surrounding community.

One participant, who completed the course with high marks, was selected to speak on behalf of the class, delivering a powerful address that reflected the commitment and resilience of the group.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the graduates and wish them continued success as they build their futures. ❤️

Meet Dali (they/them) — a nonbinary human rights activist from Uganda.

For Dali, leaving home was not a choice; it was a matter of survival.

“I left because of the situation that is happening in Uganda. I was working as a human rights activist with one of the leading transgender organizations fighting for transgender rights,” they shared.

With a visa to attend a conference — and the support of fellow human rights defenders — Dali reached Germany and sought asylum.

Less than a year into their life in Berlin, Dali has begun building a sense of community, in part through ORAM’s economic empowerment and community workshops. 🫶

“To be able to have a life and have space to share our experiences — like the drag makeup workshop — everyone was happy. For that moment, we forgot the issues we’re going through.” 🎨❤️‍🩹

Last Friday, the Trump administration announced an unprecedented and dangerous expansion of the Global Gag Rule — a move that weaponizes U.S. foreign assistance and puts millions of lives at risk.

Historically, the Global Gag Rule restricted foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds from providing or even discussing abortion care. Now, for the first time, this policy has been greatly expanded and applies to all non-military U.S. foreign aid, including humanitarian assistance — and reaches U.S.-based NGOs, UN partners, and even other governments.

This expansion goes far beyond reproductive health. It:
• Silences organizations working to protect LGBTIQ rights.
• Bans funding efforts to advance gender equality and inclusion.
• Expands harmful abortion restrictions.

This expanded Global Gag Rule is unprecedented — and it will cause real harm to queer refugees and the global LGBTIQ community more broadly.

ORAM condemns this unprecedented weaponization of foreign aid and joins calls from across the humanitarian and human rights sectors, urging Congress to oppose gag rules in all their forms.

At ORAM’s first meeting with LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Omar* stepped in to help translate for Arabic-speaking community members who didn’t speak English. From that moment, his care for others was clear.

Omar grew up in Kakuma after his family fled civil war in Sudan. As he got older, he struggled to come to terms with his bisexual identity. “I didn’t know who to turn to,” he shared.

Over time, Omar became deeply involved in the growing LGBTIQ refugee community. After participating in ORAM’s economic empowerment programs, he went on to serve as one of ORAM’s first Field Assistants — supporting community members and helping shape programs based on their most urgent needs.

After nearly two decades in Kakuma, Omar was resettled to Berlin, where he’s continuing to rebuild his life and stay connected with ORAM’s work in Germany. He’s now working toward his goal of becoming a translator — continuing the same commitment to community that first brought him into ORAM’s work.

Open for only two months, Emelda has already built a loyal following. Clients line up for her cuts — and for the future she’s working hard to build.

After surviving years of abuse, Emelda fled Uganda to rebuild her life. Through ORAM’s skills training and seed funding, she launched her own barbershop — and is now mentoring other LGBTIQ refugees along the way. 🌍

Through an apartment the organization rents, four LGBTIQ refugees live with support to rebuild their lives — access to essentials, community, and stability.

Last week, ORAM’s team visited their apartment and met three clients: a trans woman from Uganda, a trans man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a trans woman from an undisclosed location. They spoke about how the apartment has become a “healing house” — a place of belonging that many had not known in a long time.

Despite their dedication to uplifting others, Joan and Vanessa’s own lives have been turned upside down. Their home was damaged in a flood, they’ve endured physical violence, and they are struggling to meet basic food and healthcare needs.

Andry Hernández Romero, a gay asylum seeker from Venezuela, was sent from El Salvador’s CECOT prison and returned to Venezuela, his legal team confirmed.

In March, U.S. authorities transferred him during a scheduled asylum appointment and held him in CECOT for 125 days — without giving him a hearing.

His legal advocates welcome his release but worry about his safety in Venezuela, the very country he fled to escape persecution.

Today, on International Non-Binary People’s Day, we’re honoring the strength and resilience of nonbinary refugees like Riley*.

Riley, a nonbinary refugee from Rwanda living in Nairobi, shared with us the discrimination they face daily—being denied services, struggling to find safe work, and facing harassment because of their gender identity.

Through ORAM’s Digital Learning Center, part of our Economic Empowerment program, Riley gained digital skills that now enable them to work from home safely and independently.

📍 In May, ORAM hosted Stakeholder Consortium II in Berlin, a dynamic convening focused on advancing LGBTIQ inclusion in forced displacement across Central and Eastern Europe. 🌈🌍

The event brought together 52 participants from 41 organizations, including refugee-led organizations, grassroots and community-based organizations, LGBTIQ advocacy groups, INGOs, UN agencies, independent researchers, activists and donors. Participants joined from across the region, including Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, Czechia, Germany, France, and more.

Over two days, we explored a range of pressing topics:

📝 Centering refugee-led leadership and participation
📊 Strengthening inclusive and ethical research practices
⚖️ Examining the impact of Common European Asylum System reforms on trans asylum seekers

Ariane is Director of Investor Relations at the END Fund, where she leads North American institutional giving and builds partnerships with visionary philanthropists, foundations, and corporations. For over 15 years, she’s helped NGOs and UN agencies advance their fundraising, communications, and strategy efforts across four continents.

She began her career in publishing before transitioning into international development in 2008. Ariane holds an MSc in Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Political Science from McGill University.

Originally from New York City, she now lives in Ottawa with her spouse, children, and a growing crew of pets.
